Synopsis:
Scarce, factory engraved, gold plated, Remington No. 1 Vest Pocket Pistol, manufactured from 1865 to 1888.
Description:
Very rare, gold engraved Remington No. 1 Vest Pocket Pistol (also known as a Saw Handle Derringer), Cal. .22, having a 3.25" barrel whose hammer also served as the breech block. Top of barrel marked " REMINGTONS ILION NY/PATENT OCT. 1. 1861". Full serial number under the barrel. Left and right sides of frame feature delicately engraved floral bouquets as per other known examples. Smooth rosewood grips. Approximately 20,000 of these single shot pistols were produced between 1865 and 1888, though few were factory engraved.
Condition:
Near excellent as arguably re-plated. Though planes are flat and markings are sharp, there are micro irregularities under the plating around the barrel address. Also, in contrast to other gold plated examples, this pistol has all of its small parts gold plated. Most others have a case hardened hammer/blued trigger and screws/pins. Bright bore. Correct manual mechanics. A wonderful factory engraved Remington No 1 Vest Pocket Pistol that is arguably re-plated.
