SCARCE Antique CONNECTICUT ARMS & Mfg. Co. .44 RF BULLDOG Derringer Pistol
Rare HAMMOND PATENT Single Shot Deringer
Description: SCARCE Antique CONNECTICUT ARMS & Mfg. Co. .44 RF BULLDOG Derringer Pistol Rare HAMMOND PATENT Single Shot Deringer Here we present an antique Connecticut Arms & Manufacturing Co. Hammond Patent Single Shot Derringer made in Naubuc, Connecticut. Sometime in late 1865 or early 1866 they introduced this single shot cartridge pistol design with a pivoting breech. Approximately 7,400 of these single shot derringers were manufactured before production ceased in 1868 when the company went under due to a defaulted mortgage. A potent personal defense firearm, the 24-ounce Hammond, with its 4-inch blued barrel and case-hardened frame, could chamber both .44 short and .44 long rimfire cartridges. Loading was accomplished by pivoting the case-hardened breechblock to the left. Some variations of this design include models chambered in .22 rimfire, .32 rimfire, and .50 rimfire calibers, as well as those with 12-inch target barrels. A pistol-carbine with detachable wire shoulder stock was also produced. The Hammond brothers, Henry and Lewis, began their gun making venture during the American Civil War in 1863. They tried for several years before they were granted a patent for this same breech-loading design found on this pistol, but they also made a longarm that was similar in function. By the time their patent and production were under way, the Civil War had reached its end and a glut of firearms on the market stymied many companies. As a result, production numbers of this pistol were quite small, and these are quite unique and desirable today. The overall condition is nearing fine. Much original blue has been preserved on the barrel and case colors on the frame. Excellent action. The bore has retained some shimmer, has an even layer of pitting, and maintains serviceable rifling. Legible markings. Both grips are good with average handling wear. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 4 inches. Caliber: .44 Rimfire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
