Antique Henry Deringer .32 Rimfire Pocket Revolver
Scarce & Fine Derringer from 1873 by I Jones Clark
Here we present an antique Henry Deringer .32 Rimfire Pocket Revolver, made in 1873 by I.J. Clark in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Henry Deringer is perhaps one of the most recognized name in firearms history, so much so that his name became a noun in the English language, still in use today. He was known for his handsome design for single-shot percussion pistols made in Philadelphia and used all over the U.S. beginning in the 1830s and through his death in 1868. His design was much copied and his name used on these copies without his permission to increase sales. Unsurprisingly, after his death, things were no different. His family continued to use his name and his great grandson, I. Jones Clark, produced a series of pocket-sized, spur trigger revolvers that were all the rage with the close of Smith & Wesson’s monopoly on the market due to the expiration of the Rollin White patent. These are certainly extremely well made and very collectible. Only 4,000 estimated to have been made.
This revolver is far superior in build to many of the other spur trigger revolvers of the time. It features 5 shots of .32 rimfire. The tip up barrel is released on the underside with the press of the knurled latch button. The design is very much based on Smith & Wesson’s Model No. 1-1/2 Second Issue. This is also a classier pistol than much of the competition of the time, featuring this tri-color finish to the metal with case-hardening, nickel and blue. It certainly seems to do justice to the Deringer name.
The overall condition is fine. Nearly 100% of the nickel plate is present. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and extractor rod are mostly present and bright. The barrel retains about 75% of its original blue. The walnut grips retain 90% of their original varnish over very nice grain. Serial numbers match. Markings are clear and legible. The bore is in very good condition and the action is excellent. You will not find a better example of one of these 19th century self-defense pistols.
