Here we present an antique National Arms Company No. 1 Deringer, also known as the All Metal No. 1, made circa 1865-70 in Brooklyn, New York. Only about 3,000 of these were made by National Arms before the company was purchased by Colt. This scarce little Deringer was a likely choice for very concealable self-defense in the last half of the 19th Century. The entire barrel swivels on a hinge for loading, when the hammer is put into half cock and the release button is pushed. The hammer is split and acts as the rear sight when in full cock. These pistols were of all metal construction and silver plated. It is of historical firearms significance in that it was the first large caliber metallic cartridge Deringer. In fact, after Moore’s was purchased by the National Arms Co., the Colt Firearms Co. bought National Arms and started making the pistol in 1870!
This all-metal Model No. 1 was originally manufactured by Moore's Patent Firearms in Brooklyn, NY from 1860-65, followed by its successor, the National Arms Company, 1865-1870 (also located in Brooklyn, NY).
