Southern Stocked Henry Deringer Philadelphia Derringer Percussion Pocket Pistol w/ Carpet Bag Mold Flask & Dagger HISTORY
Description: Fascinating Southern Stocked Henry Deringer “Philadelphia Derringer” Percussion Pocket Pistol with Accessories & History, .38 Cal, mfg. circa 1860's. This is a super cool grouping with a great story! The pistol is a genuine Henry Deringer "Lincoln size" small pocket pistol measuring 5 ¼" long overall with a 2 ¼" barrel which according to the written provenance was owned by a Louisiana plantation owner who broke the stock in a fist fight and had it restocked in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The collection was acquired from the granddaughter in 1954 by Raymond A. McKnight of Tucson, Arizona who kept the gun for 63 years before selling it in 2017. The included letter details how he acquired the gun and the history as it was told to him; “He was the overseer for a large cotton plantation south east of Monroe, Louisiana, near the Mississippi River. One day he got into an argument with another man over how to harvest the cotton crop. This argument developed into a fist fight. Her grandfather was getting the worst of this fight and became afraid that the man might try to kill him! So he pulled out his pistol and hit the man on the side of the head, knocking him unconcious, rather than shooting him. The blow was forceful enough to break the wooden stock of his pistol…In order to have the pistol repaired he had to row a boat across the Mississippi River to Vicksburg, Mississippi." The “Little Pistol” as he refers to it came with the old carpet bag, powder flask, bullet mold, dagger, and coin purse. The pistol was published in an issue of The Gun Report when McKnight wrote in enquiring about the unusual barrel pin and round escutcheons which are not typical of Henry Deringer's guns. He also inquired to noted Deringer historian and author L. D. Eberhart who responded attributing the restock to “one of the Tennessee makers, probably the shop of Bitterlich or Schneider & Glassick.” In our opinion if the gun was restocked in Vicksburg, Mississippi as the story relates it was almost certainly done by Louis Hoffman. Hoffman was a Prussian immigrant who settled in Vicksburg in 1854 and is a known maker of Philadelphia style derringers. He continued making guns in Vicksburg well into the 1870's. The barrel and lock have a dark plum/gray patina. Original dovetailed nickel silver sight with double banded breech marked “DERINGER/ PHILADELa” with “P” proof on the left flat. Engraved lock is also stamped “DERINGER / PHILADELa”. The stock features fine checkering along the back of the grip and retains much of it's original finish with no cracks or chips. Original engraved nickel silver triggerguard, sideplate, shield wrist escutcheon, buttcap and nosecap inlays, and unique round barrel pin escutcheons. The action is very firm and crisp and functions perfectly. Intact original nipple. Rough untouched bore with distinct seven-groove rifling. Original bullet mold doubles as a rammer and ball puller! Powder flask has a lovely untouched dark patina and features two compartments to hold balls and caps. Handmade Southern style dagger measures 8" long overall with 4 5/8" double edged blade. Bone handle with forged iron and copper rivets and copper guard. Accompanied by it's original leather sheath. Original Civil War era carpet bag is fragile and in poor condition with rips and tears etc yet remains complete. Provenance included: hand written letter by Ray McKnight with transcribed copy, letter from L. D. Eberhart with transcribed copy, and copy of the page from The Gun Report picturing and discussing the pistol. This would look great displayed in a case or shadow box. A really intriguing pistol and group of related items that have been together for over 150 years!
