Description:
Antique CASED PAIR of ENGRAVED Belgian Percussion DUELING/TARGET Pistols

ATTRACTIVE “N. Chaumont” Gold Inlaid BRACE w/ACCESSORIES

Here Ancestry Guns presents a Cased Pair of Antique Liege Proofed N. Chaumont Percussion Target/Dueling Pistols, made circa the 1840s-50s in Liege, Belgium. The Chaumont family of gunmakers were based out of Liege and were known for their contributions to the development of weapons and gunmaking in the region. N. Chaumont was likely a relation of M.J. Chaumont, who is noted as active in Liege from the 1840s to 1860s.

Dueling pistols have a long history, symbolizing a time when honor was what people based their lives on. These pistols were designed for one purpose, which was deciding disputes when words failed. Throughout Europe and early America, dueling was a deadly tradition that truly shaped history. The pistols themselves became legendary, often linked to dramatic confrontations where skill, nerve, and fate collided. Each of these played a role in moments where lives and reputations hung in the balance, leaving a lasting mark on history. For a great example, look how United States history was impacted by Alexander Hamilton.

Purpose-built dueling pistols have various improvements to make them more reliable and accurate, such as longer and heavier barrels, spurs on the trigger guards, saw handles, platinum-lined touch-holes on the flintlocks, and hair triggers. All component parts were manufactured, hand-finished and then adjusted with great care and precision, which made dueling pistols much more costly than standard firearms of the period. Special care was taken when molding the lead bullets to ensure that there were no voids which would affect accuracy. Pistols were carefully and identically loaded, and each duelist was offered his choice of the indistinguishable loaded pistols. As duels were generally fought at short distances which were paced out, typically 35 to 45 feet between stationary opponents, extreme accuracy was not required. Here are two nice examples of European craftsmanship. Both of these pistols are matching and feature beautiful engravings and checkered grips.

The barrels are marked “Damas Turc” and the lockplates are marked “N. CHAUMONT”, both inlaid in gold, with floral scroll and a couple other gold accents. Includes a hardwood case fitted for the pistols as well as an included ball mold, mallet, ladle, powder flask, and other tools.

The overall condition of both pistols is very good. Original bright gray patinas. Both actions are strong. The bores have dimmed and retain sharp rifling. Well-defined checkering on the grips, with the rest of the stocks remaining fine showing minimal handling evidence. The carved wood has been refinished. Traditional floral engravings. Markings are crisp and clear. Inlays are tight and clean. Fine card and accessories. The lid opens and closes properly. Minor scuff and dings are present around the case.
