18th Century Sidearms for Self-Defense

Here we present a Brace of Antique European Flintlock Pistols, made circa the 18th Century. These handsome pistols would have been the right size to be relatively unobtrusive to the carrier yet provide plenty of firepower when called upon. In a day when multi-shot firearms were scarce, carrying two loaded pistols was just the ticket.

Each of these pistols is about 9 ½ inches in length overall, has a .48 caliber bore when measured from land to land (.50 caliber measured groove to groove). The barrels go from octagonal at the breech end to round and ringed with a cannon style flare at the muzzle. The barrel and the bottom of the pommel caps have gold designs. The lock, sideplate, and trigger guard are engraved. The cock is nicely sculpted. The stock is carved to accentuate all the steel parts. A rammer was not a feature of either of these pistols, and such would have either been carried separately.

The overall condition is fine. Original gold finish and patina throughout. The actions are excellent. The bores are patinated with strong rifling. The stocks are solid and have nice grain.
