BRACE of HOWDAH Pistols by JD DOUGALL of GLASGOW, SCOTLAND TIGER PROTECTION
Famous in India for Use Against Tigers!
Description: BRACE of HOWDAH Pistols by JD DOUGALL of GLASGOW, SCOTLAND TIGER PROTECTION Famous in India for Use Against Tigers! Here we present an antique Brace of Howdah Pistols by J.D. Dougall of Glasgow, Scotland. Howdah pistols were used in the far flung extremities of the British Empire, primarily as tiger repellant. They are named for the “howdah”, a large basket-like seat that men used to ride elephants with as they hunted from their backs. The sport originated in the late 1700s and having a flintlock or percussion backup sidearm with two large doses of lead seemed to be the answer for dangerous game or even the natives. Of course, a pair of large bore doubles would be formidable for just about anything! “J.D. DOUGALL” is engraved on the locks and “J.D. DOUGALL/GLASGOW” is atop the barrels. The locks, barrel tangs, and trigger guards are engraved with detailed floral designs. The overall condition is on both pistols is very good. Nicely refinished. The actions are strong all around. The bores are smooth and remain in good shape. The checkering on the handles is still sharp, thus offering a strong and confident grip. Here is a very nice set of mid-19th century manufactured pistols that would look great on display. An epic set of pistols from the British Empire! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrels are 6-3/8 inches. Caliber: .56 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $3695 #20527 SOLD Antique: Yes |
