1917 Dated WORLD WAR I DWM M1914 Semi-Automatic ARTILLERY LUGER Pistol C&R
Iconic WWI German Military Sidearm w/SHOULDER STOCK
Here Ancestry Guns presents a World War I “1917” Dated DWM (Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken) Pistole Parabellum P.08 Model 1914 Semi-Automatic Artillery Luger Pistol with a Matching Shoulder Stock, made in 1917 in Berlin, Germany. Basing his design off Hugo Borchardt’s seminal C93, Georg Luger successfully brought Borchardt’s work to practical fruition. While finding buyers for the C93 seemed an exercise in futility, the new Luger Pistol found many countries eager to test it and even adopt it. In 1900 the United States ordered 1,000 Lugers in 7.65x21mm Parabellum, or .30 Luger, for infantry and cavalry trials. It received pushback from soldiers that said the caliber was too small and the firearm itself was unreliable. Which, in turn, led to DMW developing the 9mm caliber version of the Luger shortly thereafter.
There are many variations in this field of collecting, but relatively few major changes in overall design from beginning to end. The Luger is certainly one of the most iconic firearms in history, made so by its association with Germany during both World Wars. The top of the chamber is Great War dated “1915”. The top of the toggle is marked “DWM”. The right side of the frame bears German military acceptance marks.
The adoption of the Lange Pistole, aka the "Artillery Luger", was authorized by the Kaiser on July 2, 1913. This P08 variation was equipped with a 200 mm (7.9 in) barrel, an 8-position tangent rear sight (calibrated to 800 meters (870 yd)) and a board-type shoulder stock with an attached leather holster. In the event of close combat, the pistol was intended to be used as a carbine with the shoulder stock attached to a lug mounted on the heel of the pistol frame. When set for long range use the rear sight element visibly moves to the left to compensate for spin drift. This pistol was intended for use by German artillery units who could not be encumbered by the long and heavy K.98 rifle.
The overall condition is fine. Original finish. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The grips show use and remain solid. Numbers match throughout.
