Scarce DWM M1906 ROYAL PORTUGUESE Contract Semi-Auto NAVY LUGER Pistol C&R
1 of only 350 Pistols w/ROYAL CREST/ANCHOR
Description: Scarce DWM M1906 ROYAL PORTUGUESE Contract Semi-Auto NAVY LUGER Pistol C&R 1 of only 350 Pistols w/ROYAL CREST/ANCHOR Here we present a C&R DWM Model 1906 Royal Portuguese Contract Semi-Automatic Navy Luger Pistol, made circa 1910 by DWM (Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken) in Berlin, Germany. While Portugal was not a naval power, a contract for 1,000 Lugers was placed with DWM late in 1909. This pistol was part of the first round of pistols the Portuguese Navy received with DWM in 1910 for 350 pistols that have the Crown/Anchor crest, known as the Model 910 in Portugal, and serial numbered 1 through 350. There is quite an interesting history with this contract variation. While DWM was filling this order, a revolution occurred in Portugal, and the Monarchy was replaced by a Republic. With the second round of pistols beginning with serial number 351 the new Republic asked DWM to change the Royal Crown crest that was originally stamped on the chamber to “R.P./Anchor”, for the “Republica Portugesa”. Evidently while in service with Portugal, as is this pistol serial numbered “125”, the earlier pistols of this contract retained the “Royal Crown” crest. This example is complete with an original wooden bottom magazine that correctly isn’t numbered. Stamped on the top of the toggle is the DWM monogram along with the chamber being stamped with the Crown/Anchor crest. The left side of the receiver is stamped with the “MP” acceptance mark, along with the Carregada extractor. Basing his design off Hugo Borchardt’s seminal C93, Georg Luger successfully brought Borchardt’s work to practical fruition. While finding buyers for the C93 seemed an exercise in futility, the new Luger Pistol found many countries eager to test it and even adopt it. In 1900 the United States ordered 1,000 Lugers in 7.65x21mm Parabellum, or .30 Luger, for infantry and cavalry trials. It received pushback from soldiers that said the caliber was too small and the firearm itself was unreliable. Which, in turn, led to DMW developing the 9mm caliber version of the Luger shortly thereafter. There are many variations in this field of collecting, but relatively few major changes in overall design from beginning to end. The Luger is certainly one of the most iconic firearms in history, made so by its association with Germany during both World Wars. The overall condition is good. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The grips show use and remain solid. The wood magazine base has been repaired. Numbers match on the barrel, frame, take down lever, side plate and toggle.
