British No. 4 Mk. 1 Flare Pistol
Description: Serial #703, 37mm, 4” barrel (11” barrel with extension fitted). This is a wartime flare gun as used by the RAF and retains 90% of the original blue finish with some fading to dull plum-gray along the exposed edges and along the sides of the roughly finished breech. There is some further gray fading along the edges of the trigger guard bow, and at the muzzle of the short barrel that is only visible when the extension is removed. The checkered black composite grips are in very good shape with some flattening of the points, scattered handling marks, and a single shallow chip at the heel on the left panel. The barrel extension has a commensurate amount of the original blue remaining as well as an old coating of protective lacquer. There is still some moderate pitting present on one of the flanges at the breech end. These robust pistols were used for signaling at airfields and on downed or returning aircraft.
