Serial #Z5372, 37mm Flare, 8" barrel with a lightly pitted bore. This is a “6.47" dated pistol that has an overall dull gray patina with about 70-75% of a flaked red paint finish remaining on the trigger. The frame has the circular “SKLAR / *SIGNAL* / PISTOL / SAN FRANCISCO" trademark on the left side, and is hand-stamped “BOAT 3" and “USS BAUSELL" on the right. The metal has some scratches and handling marks throughout, with wear along some of the high edges. The lock-up is tight and the action is fully functional. The USS Bausell was a Gearing-class destroyer, commissioned in 1946, and named for Cpl. Lewis K. Bausell (USMC) who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry at Peleliu. She saw service in the Korean War and Vietnam War, and was eventually sunk as a test target in 1987 as part of the Harpoon ASM program. This is a neat, functional USN flare gun, identified to a specific ship, and would make a great addition to a collection.
