FN High Power 9mm 1944 German Occupation Type III w/Holster, spare magazine
Description: This is the first successful double-stack pistol and has seen service all over the world since 1935. Originally designed by John Moses Browning in the early 1920’s, the prototype was refined over time into the early 1930’s. As Browning had passed away in 1926, the pistol continued to be refined by Dieudonne Saive and he modified the pistol with a staggered column magazine of his design. This gave the pistol an unusually high capacity for the time. The pistol was finally put into production in 1935 as the Grande Puissance Model of 1935. The term Grande Puissance literally means “High Power”. Although rejected by the French military in favor of an inferior design, dozens of other countries adopted the High power. It was used by both Allied and Axis powers during World War Two. It was thought of highly enough by the Germans that they forced the FN factory to continue production of the pistol under the designation of Pistole 640(b) (where “b” stands for “belgisch” or “Belgian”). It was frequently seen in the hands of the Waffen-SS and the Fallschirmja?ger (paratroops). On the Allied side, it was used by the Special Operations Executive (SOE), the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and the Special Air Service (SAS). The primary reason for this of course was the pistol’s high capacity and reliability in extreme conditions. The pistol is still in use in many places around the world. Shown here is a Type III occupation-production Pistole 640(b) that is in excellent shape considering it was produced in 1944. It still retains the majority of its original bluing, though the finish itself is not perfect due to wartime demands. The frame has a slight purplish tinge to it. This is due to both the chemicals used and the amount of time the frame remained in the bath (assuming it was hot salt bath bluing process). The frame slide and barrel have the standard WaA140 acceptance stamp. The serial numbers match between the barrel, slide, and frame. The bore is in superb condition and exhibits no pitting or rust. The trigger exhibits some finish loss. The grips exhibit some wear in the checkering. There is some slight pitting in two places on the right side of the slide. The trigger pull is very nice. The pistol comes with an original holster with the proper WaAB66 stamp. It does appear to be original rather than a copy. It has that old leather smell but no indication of mildew. It has been well taken care of over the years. There is a spare magazine as well. It has a rougher finish than the one currently in the pistol but should function just fine. As is well known, the quality of the finish and machining of magazines and other parts deteriorated as the war went on, both in Germany and occupied territories. This would make an excellent addition to any World War 2 collection.
