Description:
New Addition Crimean War Period Match Pair French 1822 Percussion Military Pistols
Offered here for sale as a new addition is this fine pair of military French percussion pistols acquired from a larger collection of French military arms just acquired.
This is an interesting pair in the sense that they are the
same military pattern (Modèle 1822) but were produced at
different French state armories. That is actually more interesting to collectors than two identical examples from the same arsenal because it illustrates how France distributed military production among its government factories.
Two different government arsenals:
- Tulle (Manufacture d'Armes de Tulle) — one of France's oldest military arms factories.
- Châtellerault (Manufacture d'Armes de Châtellerault) — established in the early 1820s specifically to increase French military arms production.
During the reign of Emperor Napoleon III, these arsenals produced interchangeable military arms to identical government specifications. A cavalryman would not have cared whether his pistol came from Tulle or Châtellerault—they were intended to be functionally identical.
The dates 1854 and 1856 are significant because they represent the
final years of Model 1822 production. By this time France was preparing for and fighting the Crimean War (1853–1856). Large numbers of percussion arms were being produced. Most pistols made in 1854–1856 were built as percussion pistols from new manufacture rather than converted from flintlocks.
Collectors generally consider these later-production examples somewhat more desirable than converted flintlocks because they left the factory as percussion pistols.
The anchor on the butt cap of one of the pistols is perhaps the most interesting feature often indicates
French naval service.
The French Navy had its own inventory and acceptance markings, and anchors commonly appear on naval pistols, muskets, cutlasses, bayonets and equipment .
Other stampings are military assembly numbers , inventory numbers, rack numbers or company numbers.
Both of the pair are fully operational. Wood and metal in very good to fine used condition. One specimen has had light cleaning on barrel while the other has a coating of oil on some parts. If desired on request we can tone down very lightly. The pair makes an attractive display and represent a seminal period of French manufacturing for the Crimean War.
