British Flintlock Short-Barreled Belt Pistol by H.W. Mortimer of London
Description: NSN, .50 Caliber, 4 1/8" octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a few traces of mild freckling along its length. This is a very handsome and well-made pistol that has an overall darkly mottled gray-black patina throughout the metal, with crisp clear engraving and sharp edges. The top flat of the barrel is marked with the maker’s name: "H.W. MORTIMER & SON LONDON / MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY"; with "H.W. MORTIMER / & / SON" on the lockplate as well. The decorative engraving is likewise crisp and clear and the lock is fully functional, catching firmly at both half and full-cock, with a functional sliding safety. The wedge-fastened walnut stock has an oval wrist escutcheon on which is engraved the crest of the Martin family (mural crown with barking talbot or hound), and the maker’s address is engraved on an oval shield on the trigger guard bow: "89 / FLEET STT". The wood has minor handling marks and small surface blemishes scattered about the thick added oil finish, and the original horn-tipped ramrod is still present. Harvey Walklate Mortimer (1753 & 1819) was a London maker and member of the famous Mortimer family of gunmakers, who operated his shop at 89 Fleet St. from 1800 & 1806. This is a very attractive pistol, and is in fine overall condition. Antique; SOLD Antique: Yes |
