BIG, SCARCE Antique AUSTRIAN 1851 CAVALRY Pistol
Description: BIG, SCARCE Antique AUSTRIAN 1851 CAVALRY Pistol Unique in Original Augustin Console “Tube Lock” Config Here we present an antique Austrian Cavalry Model 1851 Augustin Console Tube Lock Pistol, made in 1853 in Vienna. The Augustin Console Tube Lock was a short-lived ignition system unique to Austria that was adopted between the use of flintlock and percussion firearms. In fact, this pistol was adopted in 1851 and Austria adopted its replacement in 1854, leading to armory conversion to percussion for most of these pistols. Original tube locks are scarce. This pistol would have been carried in the pommel holster of a cavalryman’s saddle. This one escaped with its original tube lock still intact. Its basic operation is much the same as the flintlock that preceded it, with its external spring putting tension on the cover to what is essentially the flash pan, which contains a large firing pin. A small tube of copper that was the primer was inserted into the vent, the cover with firing pin laid over it, with the very large hammer to smash down on the firing pin. This system was better than the flintlock system, but it was soon obvious that the rest of the modern world was adopting the percussion system. This pistol is marked with “(1)853” on the left and right sides of the frame as well as the top of the barrel. Austrian eagles may also be found on the tail of the lock and the barrel in several places. Other markings include “31” on the left side of the stock and “L” near the trigger guard. A “W” stamp is visible on the right side of the grip. The overall condition is near fine. The metal surfaces remain relatively bright over the last 165 years. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good condition with an immobile crack just above the lock. The bore is smooth and clean. The action on this pistol is excellent. Here is a massive, unique and scarce horse pistol adopted in 1851 by the Austrian Cavalry! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 9-7/8 inches. Caliber: .66 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
