Made Circa 1955 with Matching Box

Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Factory Boxed High Standard “R100 Sentinel” Pistol, made circa 1955 in Hamden, Connecticut. High Standard introduced their Sentinel revolver line in 1955 at the request of Sears Roebuck, which was a major customer and owned a large amount of High Standard stock.  Sears wanted a low-cost kit gun or “tackle box” revolver to sell under their J.C. Higgins brand.  It was sold by Sears as the J.C. Higgins “Model 88”.  The J.C. Higgins guns were given distinctive grips, cylinder flutes, and cylinder release pins.  Private label versions of the Sentinel were later made for Western Auto called the “Revelation Model 99”.

The High Standard company was founded by Swedish immigrant Carl Gustav Swebilius who got his start in the gun business by working for Marlin as a machinist and later a gun designer. He also spent a little time at Winchester before starting High Standard Manufacturing to make parts for other gunmakers.  He borrowed some money from friends to buy the assets of the Hartford Firearms company. Between selling Hartford pistols and improving them, High Standard became a manufacturing company. It’s interesting the moniker attached to the company was always High Standard, yet the firearms were always branded as Hi Standard. Hi Standard semi-automatics were sought after for competition and the revolvers found their place in the market as reasonably priced .22s suitable for teaching kids to shoot, keeping varmints away from the chickens and vegetable garden on the farm and just general fun shooting.

The High Standard Mfg. Co. was officially founded in 1926 and in 1932 it moved to a bigger plant in Hamden, Conn., where production began. High Standard’s production over the years has been vast and has a reputation for both reliability and accuracy. Over time, it mainly produced handguns, including plinkers, target guns, long and short barrels, as well as serious competition pieces.
