High Standard Model HB Post-War Type 2 .22-caliber Pistol
Description: For many years, High Standard manufactured the widest range of .22-caliber autoloading pistols of any handgun manufacturer in the U.S. They started production of their first autoloader in 1932 during the Depression. This was the Model B (a Model “A” did not officially come around until 1938). When World War 2 arrived the U.S. military quickly ordered a large number of the pistols (regardless of the model) due to its ergonomic similarities with the Colt 1911 pistol as well as the fact that .22 LR is cheaper to shoot than .45 ACP when training new recruits. Eventually, the Model B-US and HD were built specifically for the U.S. military. The Model HB was introduced in May of 1940, a development of the original Model B, with the pistol being equipped with an external hammer rather than the usual internal hammer. In fact, the “H” in “HB” stands for “Hammer”. Post-war, the Model HB was given an external safety. One reason that the Model B sold so well even compared to other .22 pistols in those days was the fact that the B had a lower price point, but was still a well-built pistol. The Model B, HB, and many other “Letter Model” High Standard pistols are readily identifiable by the very sharply raked pistol grips. They looked significantly more like a ray-gun from a Flash Gordon comic than a conventional firearm which also probably helped with marketing the pistols to the gun buying public. One advantage of the Model HB is that in having an external hammer, it is much easier to tell from a quick glance whether the pistol is cocked or not than its hammerless counterparts. In a sense, this made them safer to operate than the hammerless models. This example has seen some use but is in fairly good shape. It is a Type 2 or Post-War version of the HB (the Type 1 was the version without manual safety). Most of the bluing is in excellent shape and there is little to no rust present. The grip screws are slightly worn and the screw that retains the slide stop is slightly buggered. The sides of the rear sight are lightly dinged. In contrast, the bore is in superb shape. This pistol would make a very nice addition to any High Standard collection.
