Made for Defense Against Indian Tigers & Dangerous Game!

Here we present an antique British Superposed Howdah Pistol by Robert Spring Garden, made circa the 1860s in London, England. This pistol was made for the British forces and East India Company deployed or living in India during this time. Travel through the jungle was often done by elephant, on top of which was a howdah or seat, typically ornate and with an awning of sorts for shade and comfort. Tigers were a threat and these large, typically multi-shot pistols were made to deal with them. This one is in the same .577 caliber bore as the then-issued Pattern 1853 rifle-musket and is gauged and proofed accordingly. This is a lot of firepower for the period and the same common ammunition could be used. This one features a captured ramrod on a swivel that is attached to the muzzle of the weapon, so this vital piece of gear would not be lost trying to reload from the top of an elephant in a heated situation. But what is good for the tiger would have also done just fine against two-legged enemies as well.

Robert Spring Garden was a maker of firearms and swords and a dealer of all sorts of things needed by soldiers, officers, and others headed to India. He was initially in business with his father Hugh, until his death in 1851. His listed addresses are both on Piccadilly in London, England. Appears to have worked from the 1840s to about the late-1870s.

The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The actions are strong. The bores are smooth and dim. The stock shows an old repair on the right side around the lock and the barrel tang; otherwise solid. Cap trap in the pommel. This one has Birmingham proof marks and each of the locks is marked for Robert S. Garden, giving his then-address as 200 Piccadilly, London! A very businesslike Howdah pistol for the wilds of colonial India!
