The “K” actually stands for the German word, “Kriminal”, or literally “Criminal”. Thus the full name of the PPK is “Polizeipistole Kriminal”, referring to the Kriminalamt crime investigation office as the pistol was primarily intended for detectives and other undercover officers. Both the PP and PPK were the first truly successful double action pistols in the world. The PPK was imported from Germany to the United States until 1968 when further importation was prohibited by the Gun Control Act of ’68.
