Extremely Rare, Early DWM Presentation Luger - GL Marked
Description: This is an extraordinarily rare and one-of-a-kind DWM Luger. This pistol falls into a very small serial range of prototype and 'GL' monogrammed presentation Lugers. This pistol is documented in volume 1 of Gortz & Sturgess' book, The Borchardt & Luger Automatic Pistols, and much more information is included in the photos of this listing. It bears the mark of Georg Luger on the rear toggle link and also on the magazine base, and correctly has the two-digit serial displaced to the underside of the rail of the rear link. There are fewer than 15 documented GL-marked Lugers, all from known range of 10023B-10158B. The pistol features a 4.75in barrel with dish toggle and no grip safety on the frame, and the barrel is chambered for 9mm Luger. This is the only known pistol in this serial range "with standard notched Old Model commercial foresight and bed, and the only DWM made 9mm Luger know with this calibre/barrel length/foresight configuration." The pistol appears to feature the Springfield Armory flaming bomb proof in the frame take down latch well, and though this serial is not specifically one of the recorded serials that was sent to the military for trials, it is only a couple of digits from documented examples received by Springfield Armory. Sturgess/Gortz do go on to state specifically that this pistol features all of the required specifications by the German military so it is "very likely that this pistol has a German military trials connection, possibly as a presentation piece since the toggle bears the GL monogram." It is also the earliest known example with "Gesichert" safety system. The pistol has all matching numbered small parts, with no numbering on the magazine or grips. The original blue rates at about 97%, with just minor thinning on the barrel and a little bit of high edge wear. Excellent bore. Sharply checkered grips with no cracks or chips. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Handgun Caliber: 9x19mm Parabellum (9mm Luger, 9x19mm NATO) |
