Fine Vintage WWI Period German P.08 Luger with Police Markings
Description: Fine Vintage WWI Period German P.08 Luger with Police Markings Offered for sale and just acquired is this WWI vintage P.O8 German 9MM luger serial number 895a made at the Erfurt factory and originally left in 1912. Post WWI it was given to the police and has the factory double date marking 1912/1920. It has seen use but has a very good bore with sharp markings. It is all original with exception of after market magazine but functions in it. The backstrap is stamped "S.P.O.1.170." denoting police usage. It retains large majority of straw color on appropriate parts and in very good original condition with very good grips. This P.08 Luger was made at the Erfurt arsenal in 1912, reissued in the post-World War I period with a “double date” 1912/1920 marking, and clearly marked for police use (backstrap marked “S.P.O.1.170.”) which indicates early Weimar era police inventory and unit assignment. The double date (the original 1912 manufacture date with an added “1920” on the receiver or frame) is characteristic of post-World War I reissue markings applied after the Treaty of Versailles. They denote that the pistol was retained in official government inventory under the Weimar Republic and formally accepted into service again after 1920 rather than just being a wartime bring-back. The “S.P.O.” prefix on the backstrap — as in S.P.O.1.170. — is a unit/administrative issue marking applied by Weimar-era German police authorities. These markings identify the police organization and the specific inventory number of that pistol. According to research on Weimar and early German police unit marks, many police grip markings follow this type of pattern:
There were multiple organizational codes used by Weimar police forces, ranging from command districts to police schools (e.g., Ostpreussen Police School). After WWI, the Treaty of Versailles drastically reduced Germany’s military forces, but police forces (Schutzpolizei, Landjägerei, Kriminalpolizei, etc.) were allowed to retain arms and even kept some military surplus weapons. This specimen also exhibits Police-specific safety. L547 Thank you for your order. Shipping is $48.
