Antique Mauser Large Ring Hammer Broomhandle with Matching Shoulder-Stock Sold by Westley Richards & Co.
Description:
Serial #12165, 7.63mm Mauser (.30 Mauser), 5 1/2" barrel with a good bore that has light-moderate freckling within the grooves. This is an 1897-made, all matching pistol that has retained 80-85% of the original blue finish that has silvered at the muzzle, on the high edges and projections and on the leading edge of the magazine housing, as well as fading to mottled gray on the gripstraps. Much of the original bright fire blue remains on the extractor, safety, and firing pin plate, while the correct 23-groove walnut grips are in very good shape with minor handling marks and surface blemishes present on both panels. The pistol is accompanied by an original walnut holster-stock with matching numbered iron and faint, but still legible "WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co. Ld. / LONDON" stamp on the left side just ahead of the hinge plate. The wood has minor handling marks and surface blemishes scattered about the reapplied varnish and there are two with-the-grain cracks: one running forward along the top of the comb for about 3 1/4" from the holster mouth; the second runs for about 3 1/2" forward from the door hinge plate corner. The pistol has correct pre-1912 German proofs "(crown) / (crown) / U", with a subsequent post-1952 Ulm Proofhouse stamp opposite. No other proofs are present. This is a splendid example of a pre-1898 Broomhandle, with a desirable British retailer marking on the stock, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. Antique;
