1896 C96 Waffenfabrik Broomhandle Mauser Wartime Commercial 7.63mm WITH STOCK
Description: This variant is distinguished by the first appearance of the New Safety. It superceded the Prewar Commercial, perhaps as early as 1912. The war didn't start until August 1914, but this variant is called the Wartime Commercial nonetheless. It is identical to the Prewar Commercial (the later variety with six rifling grooves), except for a few changes -
The Wartime Commercial model had around 144,000 units made between 1912-14 and 1918. The authors of System Mauser note serial 290090 as the lowest number Wartime Commercial they'd seen. However, my database has one with a much lower number - presenting serial 232232, a Wartime Commercial in all respects (New Safety, 30-groove grips, tangent sight without a "900" mark, etc). System Mauser gives an observed high serial of 433900 for Wartime Commercials. My own database lists Wartime Commercials up to 426651. Item Specifications: Make: Mauser Model: C96 Serial Number: 307417 Year of Manufacture: Ca. 1914 Caliber: 7.63mm Mauser Action Type: Single Action Semi–Auto with Internal Magazine Markings: The top of the barrel extension's chamber ring is marked "WAFFENFABRIK / MAUSER / OBERNDORF A/N", the left has a crowned "U" and the right has an unfamiliar marking. A similar marking is found on the bottom of the bolt under the grasping kobs, the rear of the frame below the serial number, on the sear arm above the serial marking, the sear arm, the top of the frame in front of the magazine well, and the rear of the hammer below the ring. The bottom of the barrel has inspection markings. The bottom of the bolt has a crowned "U", also found on the bolt locking block. The top of the bolt stop is marked "1527". The rear face of the bolt has an intertwinned S and N followed directly underneath it is "417". In two places below the bolt on the rear is the serial number "307417". The top of the bolt locking block is marked "1527". Barrel Length: 5 1/2” Sights / Optics: The rear sight is a “V” notched rear sliding elevator sight with markings from “50-1000”, with 900 not stamped. The front sight is a blade fixed to the front of the barrel. Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece serrated walnut panels (34 serrations). The grips have minor handling wear with only a few scattered light marks. The serrations are well defined. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Fine condition. Type of Finish: Blued Finish Originality: Original Bore Condition: The bore is gray with well defined rifling. Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 85% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. There is scattered light finish wear, most notable in the barrel and the backstrap around the stock slot. There are several scattered light nicks and scratches, again most in the barrel. Overall, this pistol is in about Very Good condition. Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None. Our Assessment: The Broomhandle Model 1896 Mauser is certainly an interesting looking firearm. Its features are very distinctive with its tangent rear sight, forward magazine, grasping tabs for the bolt and ring hammer. In addition to being used in the Great War, popularized in Soviet films as the iconic weapon of the Russian revolution and civil war, it was also used as a basis for futuristic weapons like the blaster used by Han Solo in Star Wars. This pistol was made around 1912-1914. The distinctive Large Ring hammer followed the "Cone Hammer" and preceded the small ring hammers which would be used for most of production. Most C96 pistols of this era show quite a bit more wear, due to both their age and being produced during, and frequently used for, some of the most devastating conflicts of the 20th century. This example is in quite nice condition, especially compared to most other specimens, retaining about 85% of its metal finish, a decent bore, strong mechanics, and all-matching serial numbered parts. As for the stock, there is no serial number on the stock. Most do not, as there are many different versions and variations. The stock is all original and is in 92-95% condition of new. Very light and minor wear. (Again, I am happy to share as many photos as you would like, just send me an email. I'm only able to upload 12 to this listing). The hinges and metal parts are also fully functional, original and in 92-95% condition of new. The leather harness is after market, but in excellent shape and very tight leather. Payment/Housekeeping Items: We hope you find as much interest in this firearm as we did. It is a special part of our history and is in great condition as well! Our price includes FREE SHIPPING, and of course is required to be sent to an FFL dealer of your choice. Some important points:
