A Superlative Early Mauser Model 1896 "Broomhandle" Pistol Ensemble – Conehammer, c.1897
Description: A Superlative Early Mauser Model 1896 "Broomhandle" Pistol Ensemble – Conehammer, c.1897 We are pleased to offer one of the finest early Mauser Model 1896 automatic pistol ensembles encountered in over five decades in the fine arms trade. Just acquired from one of the most prestigious arms collections in this area, this superb example represents the rare and highly coveted early Mauser Conehammer variant, serial number 6724, manufactured circa 1897, solidly placing it in the antique category. Chambered in 7.63mm Mauser, this pistol embodies the elegant engineering and robust design that made the C96 legendary. Its status is elevated even further by the inclusion of its original matching serial-numbered wooden shoulder stock, leather holster, and cleaning tool — a complete and utterly exceptional set. This piece is further distinguished by its engraved British retailer marking: “J. Venables & Son – Oxford”, one of the respected names among early British firearms dealers known to have imported and sold these iconic pistols. He and his son were active on 99 St. Aldales St. in Oxford from 1860-1928. Such dealer-marked pieces are extraordinarily rare and imbue the pistol with additional historic value — recalling the era when distinguished Englishmen, such as a young Winston Churchill, carried similar sidearms in colonial campaigns. In superb original condition, this Conehammer retains virtually all of its original factory blued finish, with vibrant fire-blue still present in the correct small components — a testament to the pistol’s careful preservation. The walnut grips are excellent, and the bore remains pristine, with sharp rifling and minimal signs of use. The stock is matching to the pistol and with just a few use marks. The leather is smooth and supple and includes an equally scarce cleaning tool. Early Conehammers like this are exceedingly scarce, especially in such complete, matching condition. The combination of early production, British dealer provenance, and unmatched original finish make this not only a museum-grade artifact but a crown jewel for any serious collector of early automatic pistols or fine historic arms. A truly exceptional opportunity — this is, without exaggeration, one of the finest early Mauser Broomhandle sets we have had the good fortune to have handled. MM98-X. Thanks for your bid.
