Mauser P.08 Luger S/42 9mm pistol Made 1938 w/22 Conversion Kit, Holster
Description: Here we have a hard to find set up involving both a Mauser-made P.08 Luger pistol and a conversion kit. The Luger, in addition to DWM, was produced by Mauser under license before and during World War II. The pistol shown is among those known as the S/42 model and is the most common variation of the Pre/World War II Lugers. It was produced in 1938 and has matching serial numbers on everything except the magazine, which are instead marked “fxo”. The pistol has three acceptance stamps on the right side of the receiver. The first two are an eagle over the number 63. The third is a receiver test fire proof mark. The full serial number (both numbers and suffix letter) is given on the front of the frame, while the 4-digit number is present at the bottom of the barrel and the left side of the receiver. The last two digits of the serial number are stamped on the locking bolt, the side plate, the rear and central toggle links, and the safety bar. Given the uneven wear on the finish with respect to the barrel and the rest of the pistol, the barrel may be a replacement. However, it does have the correct serial number, so if it is a replacement barrel, it would likely have been done at the factory. The upper and lower receivers exhibit finish wear, but the pistol does not appear to have been re-blued at any point in time. Both the backstrap and front strap of the grip bear the majority of bluing loss, while the upper receiver has mainly turned to a nice patina. The bore itself is perfect and the pistol is mechanically tight, which should be the case given the tight manufacturing tolerances Lugers are built to. The grips appear to have had medallions with the letter W installed, which I believe involved the previous owner’s name (American). The pistol also comes with a second set of custom grips which appear to be post war American made examples. I do not believe these are of German make mainly due to the quality of the work. The grips are made using a laminate setup which appears to have not held up over time. The glue between layers has dried out completely over time resulting in one of the grips becoming separated. It could be glued back together with a little effort. Another reason for suspecting American manufacture is that the Germans did not use two different types of wood when making laminate grips or stocks. The medallions were installed in way that left the glue underneath visible – an outcome that would not likely have been accepted under the high standards that German wood workers are known for. As mentioned before, the pistol comes with a rare .22-caliber conversion kit. The kit consists of a long, 7.25” barrel, a replacement toggle system to handle the light 22 loads, and a 22-caliber magazine. The toggle system has matching serial numbers and acceptance marks on all its components; however, the barrel and magazine’s serial numbers do not match those of the toggle system itself. Finally, there is a World War 2 holster that comes with the gun, which is in good condition. It was made it 1939 as stamped on the back. Also stamped on the back is the name of the manufacturer (Joseph Moll, Goch) and what appears to be a faded acceptance mark (Waa387). A spare magazine and a magazine loading tool are included inside. There is one thing to note with pre-war and WWII built Lugers. They were built to use the German 124gr 9mm loads. These are hotter than the usual American loads, particularly the standard 115gr load. That load may not be sufficiently powerful to fully cycle the Luger’s action. It is recommended that owners use the standard US 124gr loads at a minimum. Lugers are the most desirable of all German pistols, military or commercial. They are becoming increasingly rare as time goes by, even more so for the .22 caliber conversion kits made for them. Do not miss out on the chance to own one of these fine pistols. Those interested are welcome to request extra photos.
