WW1 Springfield 1911 Pistol and Accessories Belonging to Capt. in 5th Massachusetts Infantry & Mexican Border Service
Description:
Serial #73327, .45 ACP, 5" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This a fantastic identified grouping centered on a US Model 1911 pistol by Springfield Armory that has retained 75-80% of the original blue finish, with mottled gray fading along the top of the slide, silvering along the raised projections, and small areas of dark plum-brown freckling on the slide and on the frame forward of the trigger guard. The pistol has the following "S" marked parts: barrel, extractor, firing pin plate, slide latch, safety, grip safety, hammer, mainspring housing, magazine release, and trigger. The checkered double-diamond grips are 11 row Springfield-made panels and are in fine shape with only minor wear and flattening of the points on either side. The pistol is housed in an original "RIA / 1918" marked brown leather M1912 holster with handwritten identification on the lip under the "US" cover flap: "CAP(T) KEAN / G (G) Co 5TH MASS." The leather is in fine shape with only minor scuffs and marks scattered throughout, as well as some minor crazing on some of the flex points. Also included are a 1913-dated Mills double magazine pouch containing two Springfield-made lanyard loop magazines, and a pair of French-made binoculars with Andrew J. Lloyd Co., Boston, branded eye-pieces. The dark brown leather covering has some minor scuffing and the optics are clear. Additionally, the grouping includes Kean’s Henderson Ames Co.-made Masonic Knights Templar dress sword that measures 34 1/8" overall, with a 27 1/2" straight, unfullered blade with decorative etched panels on both faces. His name is present on the obverse panel: "F. C. Kean"; with "Hugh De Payens / Commandery / K. T." opposite. Lastly is a large portfolio binder containing documents and photographs pertaining to Capt. Kean’s military service ranging from his commission as a 1st Lieutenant in November of 1909, to his "Mexican Border Service" in 1916, and his service in the "War With Imperial Germany and Austria." Frederick Clarence Kean was born on August 25 1881 in Woburn, MA, to Clarence and Abbie Kean. He was commissioned into Co. G, 5th Infantry, Massachusetts State Militia on November 8, 1909. He had been promoted to Captain of Co. G when the regiment was mustered into federal service and moved to Fort Bliss, Texas for service securing the Mexican border in June of 1916. The regiment was again mustered into federal service on August 5, 1917 for service in France during WW1, being redesignated the 3rd Pioneer Infantry in February, 1918, and saw service in the Meuse & Argonne Sector. The regiment returned to the United States on July 23, 1919, and reverted to the 5th Infantry designation when it returned to state service. Kean retired from military service on April 26, 1921, and became the instructor for the cadet battalion at Woburn High School. He passed away at the age of 89 on January 10, 1971, and is buried at Woodbrook Cemetery in Woburn. This is an excellent WW1 grouping, identified to a long-serving field officer, and would make a splendid centerpiece for a collection of WW1 or 20th century militaria. FFL or C&R;

Kean’s military service ranging from his commission as a 1st Lieutenant in November of 1909, to his "Mexican Border Service" in 1916, and his service in the "War With Imperial Germany and Austria." Frederick Clarence Kean was born on August 25 1881 in Woburn, MA, to Clarence and Abbie Kean. He was commissioned into Co. G, 5th Infantry, Massachusetts State Militia on November 8, 1909. He had been promoted to Captain of Co. G when the regiment was mustered into federal service and moved to Fort Bliss, Texas for service securing the Mexican border in June of 1916. The regiment was again mustered into federal service on August 5, 1917 for service in France during WW1, being redesignated the 3rd Pioneer Infantry in February, 1918, and saw service in the Meuse & Argonne Sector. The regiment returned to the United States on July 23, 1919, and reverted to the 5th Infantry designation when it returned to state service. Kean retired from military service on April 26, 1921, and became the instructor for the cadet battalion at Woburn High School. He passed away at the age of 89 on January 10, 1971, and is buried at Woodbrook Cemetery in Woburn. This is an excellent WW1 grouping, identified to a long-serving field officer, and would make a splendid centerpiece for a collection of WW1 or 20th century militaria. FFL or C&R;
