British Pattern 1842 Sea Service Pistol with 1849 Tower Lock
Description: NSN, .57 Caliber, 6" barrel with a very good, bright bore that has some minor freckling. This is a handsome pistol that has a crisp "(Crown) / VR / TOWER 1849" marked lockplate and extensive British military proofs on the barrel breech. The metal has an overall dark plum-brown patina with silvering at the muzzle and along some of the high and projecting edges, as well as some very mild pinprick pitting on the nipple bolster and hammer. A single tiny spoy of surface oxidation is present on the iron belt hook next to the screw. The walnut stock has a thick added varnish with minor handling marks and blemishes scattered throughout. The pistol was refurbished at Pimlico in the 1860s, and reclassified as a 2nd Class arm (large "2"), with the requisite stamps present on the right side of the grip, partially obscured by old impact marks. Two contractor names are stamped onto the lefts side below the belt hook: "T. ORAM" (Thomas Oram of Birmingham, ca. 1840); and second larger contractor name that is only partially legible: "A. (? ? ? ?) MAN." The action is firm and locks smartly at both half and full-cock. This is a very good-near fine example of a late singe-shot percussion Sea Service pistol, with profuse markings, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. Antique; SOLD Antique: Yes |
