French Model 1733 Flintlock Pistol Revolutionary War
Description: NSN, .69 Caliber, 12 1/4" part octagon barrel with a good, light-moderately pitted bore. This is a handsomely proportioned pistol that has an overall gray and mottled plum-brown patina on the exposed metal of the barrel and lock (no markings are visible on either), with slightly more gray on the swan-necked cock and frizzen. The walnut stock pin-fastened and has numerous handling marks and bruises scattered throughout the thick added varnish. There is a stable diagonal crack that runs through the forend on both sides just ahead of the ramrod tailpipe, and a rectangular 3 1/2" long repair with added metal band reinforce at the nose of the forend on the left side. The letters "DB" are deeply carved into the wood on the right side just above the rear point of the lockplate on the right side. The brass furniture has an overall bright yellow-ochre patina, and what appears to be the original brass-tipped ramrod is still in place. While this pistol is nearly identical in configuration to the example illustrated as 21.PP on page 252 of "Battle Weapons Of The American Revolution" by George Neumann {1998}, the distinctive double-lobed sideplate on this example does not appear to have ever had a belt clip installed. The action is fully functional and locks firmly at half-cock, although the full-cock catch is fairly soft. This is a great looking pistol, of both French and Indian War and Rev War vintage, and would make a nice addition to any collection. Antique; SOLD |
