Rare U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1807/1817 Flintlock Pistol
Description:
SOLD 2/6/23
Because of the “1818” stamp on the lock-plate and barrel, this pistol has been inaccurately named the Model "1818 Springfield Pistol". It actually originated in 1807 at the Secretary of War, Henry Dearborn's request for the mass production of Calvary pistols at the Springfield Armory. Three months later, Springfield Armory produced 300 locks, 400 barrels and one sample pistol for Dearborn. While Dearborn thought “the pistol [was] a good piece of work, the [.69] caliber [was] too large” So the production ceased on the project. The locks and barrels were stored and virtually untouched until 1817, when the Superintendent of the Springfield Armory at the time, Lieutenant Colonel Roswell Lee, wrote to the Ordnance Office in Washington because he believed “it would be a great saving to make [these locks and barrels] work in new pistols”
After receiving approval, Lee ordered the production of this particular pistol... so much for Fun and History.
This is the extremely rare, Type I Springfield Model 1818 Contract Flintlock Pistol, It is .69 smoothbore and has a round iron 10 1/2" proofed barrel, dated "1818" with a recessed "P" and "eagle head / V" stamp. The Lock is marked with a very light "SPRING/FIELD / 1818", and “U.S.”
The Stock is solid, with expected light scratches and minor dings from years of actual service.
The barrel, lock and iron furniture have a dark brown patina. Gun has been expertly reconverted to flintlock. The barrel breech has moderate to heavy flash pitting and the markings are light but legible. The action is excellent.
