REMINGTON U.S. ARMY MODEL 1871 ROLLING BLOCK SINGLE SHOT PISTOL CIRCA 1872-4. .50 caliber center fire. 8” round barrel. Government Inspector’s “P” proof “S” Sub-Inspector’s stamp on left side of frame along with a crisp Remington address and patent dates stamp (May 3rd and Nov. 15th, 1864, April 17th, 1866”). Left side of grip with visible inspector’s cartouche with “CRS” script initials for U.S. Govt. Sub-Inspector Curtis R. Stickney who is known to have inspected at Remington in the early 1870’s. Very good plus to fine overall and 100% original. 50% plus blue on the barrel and some grey case hardening on frame with some spots of light salt and pepper on both. Nice wood with the original finish and the grip with the cartouche. The butt has a very small brass flush inlay which is possibly the remains of an collection tag. Perfect working order and brilliant, mint bore. General Phil Sheridan was interested in big bore breech loading single shot pistols with more power than the standard .44 cal. revolver of the conversion revolvers in service at the time. The advent of the more powerful .45 Long Colt cartridge in the Model 1873 was the end serious single shot service pistol consideration except for signal guns.
