Rev War Era 1777 Dated East India Company Flintlock Pistol by Staton
Description:
NSN, .67 Caliber, 11 7/8" barrel with a fair, lightly pitted bore. This is a large pistol, just over 19" in length overall, that has a mottled gray patina on the barrel, and a slightly darker gray and plum-brown patina on the lock. Even pinprick pitting is present along the length of the barrel with deep proofs and a clear EIC property mark at the breech, and a faint, partially legible maker’s name along the top: "S(TAT)O(N)". The lockplate has a crisp "STATON" maker’s name and EIC marking. The lock is partially functional, locking firmly at both half and full-cock, but the trigger no longer releases the cock which must be pushed forward by hand in order for the mainspring to work. The pin-fastened stock is worn and has old chips along the edge of the barrel that have become rounded over time, as well as a transverse repair just visible on either side just ahead of the lock. Additionally, the brass sideplate has two vacant holes, presumably where a belt hook was once installed. The pistol was probably the product of Thomas Staton, a London gunmaker and Ordnance contractor who was active in the late 1770s. This is a great looking East India Company pistol, with a Revolutionary War date, and is in good plus condition overall. Antique;
