This Spreewerk-assembled P.38 represents one of the most complex and scarce late-war to immediate postwar German pistol variants. Built using an FN-manufactured slide and later subjected to postwar control, this pistol reflects the chaotic material redistribution that followed Germany’s collapse. Only a very limited number of these FN-slide Spreewerk assemblies were completed.

Mechanically, the pistol retains the proven P.38 short-recoil, locked-breech system with double-action capability. Designed for durability and rapid deployment, the platform remained in use well beyond the war due to its reliability and ease of maintenance. Mixed-component construction was common in this late and postwar period.

The Eagle/88 proof is a Belgian FN acceptance mark, confirming the slide’s origin at Fabrique Nationale. The large “E” on the left trigger guard and the “46” stamp on the right are consistent with French postwar control and inventory practices. The presence of an Imperial Eagle further illustrates the blending of wartime and postwar inspection regimes.

With an estimated production run of approximately 1,500 pistols, this configuration is markedly rarer than standard wartime P.38 variants. FN-slide examples are aggressively pursued due to their multinational origin and documented scarcity. This pistol occupies a niche collector category that bridges WWII German production and early Cold War European rearmament.

Visually and historically, this P.38 tells a story few firearms can—one of defeat, occupation, and reuse. Its mixed proofs and stamps form a layered record of European arms history from 1943 through 1946. For advanced collectors, it represents depth, rarity, and undeniable historical intrigue.
