Description: Deutsche Werke ORTGIES 6.35mm Hammerless SEMI-AUTO Pistol C&R w/EXTRA MAG Type Pistol Given to EVA BRAUN by the Führer Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Deutsche Werke Ortgies Pistol, made circa the early 1920s in Erfurt, Germany with a production run between 1919 and 1924. Heinrich Ortgies designed the pistol while living in Liège, Belgium during World War I. After the war, he moved to Erfurt, Germany, where in 1919 he began production of the pistol in his own factory, but died later in the same year. Eventually the design was passed to Deutsche Werke, a ship building company based in Berlin. These pistols came with several different markings on the slide but were never given any specific model names other than simply “Ortgies”. The Ortgies pistol is a hammerless semi-automatic pistol produced in Germany in the years immediately after World War I, first by its inventor Heinrich Ortgies and then by Deutsche Werke. Inexpensive, but of good quality, the pistol achieved considerable success at contemporary shooting competitions and, as an export product, was popular throughout the Americas. The pistol was produced in 6.35 mm, 7.65 mm, and 9 mm Kurz variants, all using the same blowback operating mechanism. Although not expensive, at the time it was of advanced design and high quality construction with relatively few parts. This example is marked with a “Crown over N” proof mark. The Crown over N is a German pre-war proof mark used before April 1, 1940. The "N" indicates that the gun has been proofed with "nitro" or smokeless powder. The overall condition is very good. Strong action. Some original finish is present and shares space with a dark patina. Good grips. The bore has crisp rifling while dimming slightly. Markings are legible. Includes an extra magazine.
