Here we present a C&R World War II Chinese Contract Canadian Inglis High Power Mk. I* Pistol Manufactured circa 1944 in Toronto, Canada. By 1940, John Inglis and Company were producing more than 60% of the Bren guns used by the Commonwealth and 30% of the British army’s. More than 100,000 Bren guns would be delivered by the end of the war. In April of 1943, China needed arms and was working with the Canadian government to get them. They requested 180,000 High Powers with wooden shoulder stocks and long range tangent sights from Canada. 

After much negotiation, Fabrique Nationale eventually agreed to license the High Power to Canada for a small fee. They also provided the Canadians with blueprints and technical assistance, including having Dieudonné Saive, who finished the High Power’s design after Browning’s death, go to Canada to assist with production. By early 1944, 4,000 Inglis High Power pistols had been built and “delivered” to the Chinese. Because of logistical reasons, those pistols were sitting in Chinese-owned warehouses located in India. Instead of being used to fighting the Japanese like the Canadians thought they would be, they were sitting there, unused. With no way of getting the pistols into the fight, the Canadian government canceled the contract after only 4,000 pistols were delivered, and another 14,000 pistols were made but not yet delivered. The 14,000 pistols that had yet to be delivered would eventually be absorbed by the British SOE. The Special Operations Executive (SOE) was a secret British World War II organization. These are widely known as the “No. 1 Chinese Contract” high powers.

The High Power is a very interesting example of a WWII handgun used by both the Allies and the Axis Powers. The High Power was designed by the famous John Moses Browning and brought to completion by Dieudonné Joseph Saive after Browning’s death on November 26, 1929. The result was a 13-round double stack magazine pistol in 9mm. Not only was the pistol influential before and during the war, but after WWII it was adopted en masse all over the world by an estimated 50 militaries. Its double stack magazine design itself has gone on to be used in virtually all modern double stack handguns.
The over condition is very good. The action is excellent. The bore is in nice condition with sharp rifling. The grips are solid. The holster stock has been completely carved as a status symbol and remains solid. Small and discreet import mark. An awesome piece!
