RARE JAPANESE KAWAGUCHIA FLARE GUN

This is the rarest of all Japanese flare guns - a 39 mm single barrel signal pistol made by KAWAGUCHIA company. It is a massive gun with brass frame and a nickeled barrel - overall length is 12 inches. Profusely marked with various Japanese symbols and in English and serial numbered 455. Only one other similar gun is known in the collector circles and it is described in Derby's reference book. He believes that production started in late 30s. No other information is available. Although this particular specimen is marked May. followed by  1957. , it might not actually represent the year 1957 but rather a 19 Showa date followed by numerals 57. 
The gun remains in very good working condition with some flaking to the nickel and a few minor dents near the muzzle of the barrel. 
This is by far the rarest of all the Japanese flare pistols as only 2 have been reported.
