Here we present a C&R Spanish Civil War Era Republica Espanola Astra Copy of the Model 1921/400 Semi-Automatic Pocket Pistol chambered in 9mm Largo and made circa 1937-39 in Valencia, Spain. During the Spanish Civil War, Republican Forces were unable to procure enough handguns from established factories which were in Nationalist hands. The Republicans produced exact copies of the Astra Model 1921/400. The design was reverse engineered and made in an ex-textile factory for the Republican (losing) side in the Spanish Civil War.

Underrated in the past by some American gun experts, who in general had a poor view on Spanish guns because of its origin and its “tubular” “water pistol” looks, the pistol is today an interesting collector piece and much appreciated specifically among German collectors. In addition, it is also an accurate service pistol for target shooting, thanks to its low axis over the hand. A powerful pistol, using original 9mm Largo Spanish military loads were on a par with .38 Super factory loads.
The overall condition is fine. Original finish. Strong action, apart from the hold open functioning intermittently. The bore is mostly bright with some frosting and nice rifling. Fine grips. Markings are sharp. Circled “RE” logo on top of the slide, grips, and magazine.
