Here Ancestry Guns presents a Cased Pair of antique Scottish Rams Horn Pistols made circa 1830s to the 1840s by Richard Southall Jr. in Birmingham, England. Richard Southall was a British gunmaker circa 1817 at 37 Livery Street in Birmingham. It appears that in 1820 Richard Southall Jr. took over the business from his father, working out of the same address.
These are referred to as “rams horn” pistols, due to the horn-like scrolls on the pommels of these pistols. This style entered the picture in the late 17th century and endured until around the late 19th century, though by the end of this period they were mainly just a decorative part of traditional Highland dress. Examples such as these are almost entirely of all metal construction. This style of pistol is what would have been carried by many members of the Jacobite army under “Bonnie Prince Charlie” Stuart when they were defeated at Culloden. Additionally, this style of pistol would later be adopted by the Highland Regiments of the British Army, with officers generally wearing them tucked under the left arm.

These guns have bead front and notch rear sights, with wire etched leafy vine and stand of arms decoration on the nitre blue finished barrel, and “SOUTHALL” on the engraved lockplate. They have fish head hammers with engraved metal stocks with an engraved and nitre blue finished triggerguard, ramrod, and a cleaning pick that threads into the butt. Included with the lot is a hardwood case bearing a J. Blisset merchant label inside the lid, with space for both pistols and the following included accessories; a brass powder flask, wooden ramrod, bone cap container, and some loose balls.

The overall conditions are fine. Original finishes and patinas. Fire blue on the barrel, trigger guard, and pommel cap. Excellent actions. Both bores are dim and smooth, remaining in good shape for their ages. The engravings are crisp. The hardwood case bears a J. Blisset merchant label inside the lid. It houses both pistols and the accessories: brass powder flask, wooden ramrod, cap container, and some loose balls. The case and accessories are all in good to very good shape. The powder flask does have a split in a side seam.
