Antique ENGRAVED PAIR British RUMBOLD Percussion DUELING/OFFICER’S Pistols
Inscribed GOLD & SILVER ACCENTED Conversion Pistols
Description: Antique ENGRAVED PAIR British RUMBOLD Percussion DUELING/OFFICER’S Pistols Inscribed GOLD & SILVER ACCENTED Conversion Pistols Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Engraved Pair of Gold and Silver Accented Rumbold Percussion Conversion Dueling Pistols, made circa the late 1700s to the early 1800s in Leicester, England. These would have started out life as flintlocks and converted when the more reliable percussion firing system was introduced, likely somewhere around the 1830s to the 1840s. Dueling pistols have a long history, symbolizing a time when honor was what people based their lives on. These pistols were designed for one purpose, which was deciding disputes when words failed. Throughout Europe and early America, dueling was a deadly tradition that truly shaped history. The pistols themselves became legendary, often linked to dramatic confrontations where skill, nerve, and fate collided. Each of these played a role in moments where lives and reputations hung in the balance, leaving a lasting mark on history. For a great example, look how United States history was impacted by Alexander Hamilton. Purpose-built dueling pistols have various improvements to make them more reliable and accurate, such as longer and heavier barrels, spurs on the trigger guards, saw handles, platinum-lined touch-holes on the flintlock, and hair triggers. All component parts were manufactured, hand-finished and then adjusted with great care and precision, which made dueling pistols much more costly than standard firearms of the period. Special care was taken when molding the lead bullets to ensure that there were no voids which would affect accuracy. Pistols were carefully and identically loaded, and each duelist was offered his choice of the indistinguishable loaded pistols. As duels were generally fought at short distances which were paced out, typically 35 to 45 feet between stationary opponents, extreme accuracy was not required. Here are two nice examples of British craftsmanship. Both of these pistols are matching and nicely engraved, with gold & silver accents, and checkered grips. There are gold lined sunken “RUMBOLD/ LEICESTER” maker's mark on the breech plugs, and the locks are signed “RUMBOLD.” The silver wrist escutcheons are inscribed “JB”. The overall condition of both pistols is fine. Both actions are strong. Original dark patinas. Both bores have dimmed but retain some shimmer and hold strong rifling. Markings are legible. Sharply checkering grips. The wood is in good shape with average wear, cracks, and dings. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrels are 9-1/2 inches.
