Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Engraved and Cased Matching Pair of British Banner Marked Boxlock Flintlock Coat Pocket/Boot Pistols, made circa the early 1800s likely in London or Birmingham, England. Though these pistols have “Banner” marked on the lock, they are very similar to those manufactured by Samuel Nock from the same era. Samuel Nock was the nephew of famed innovative gunmaker Henry Nock and apprenticed under him. Samuel was first listed as a gunmaker in 1804 at Hawkesbury Place in London before moving to 180 Fleet Street between 1806 and 1822, and then between 1823 and 1852 he was in business at Regents Circus. After he died in 1851, the business was carried on by the executors from 1853 to 1858. He was also an accomplished gunmaker and worked through the transitional period from flintlocks to percussion systems. He served as a royal gunmaker to the English monarchy from King George III in 1805 up to Queen Victoria starting in 1837.

These self-defense pistols would have been most at home in the coat pocket of anyone in the busy cities of London, Paris and Liege during the early to mid-1800s. These style pistols are light and simple. The “Coat/Pocket Pistol” name says it all. They were the "Saturday Night Specials" of the 18th-19th century. Before the Deringer, they were "Gentleman's" or "Muff Pistols", typically, a smaller pistol that was easily concealed. They were favored among the gentry and women because of these traits. Men would carry them concealed in a waistcoat pocket and women would hide them in a hand muff.

The overall conditions are good. Original gray patinas. Both actions are strong. The bores are smooth and remain in good shape for their ages. Markings are legible. Both grips are in good shape with average wear, dings and scuffs. The modern case is fine. Also includes two flints, and a combination pick/screwdriver.
