COLT RARE CONSECUTIVE WWI 1911 U.S. ARMY .45's (1917)
Description: Here's something that is rarely encountered...a consecutively serial numbered pair of WW1 Colt 1911 U.S. Army .45 automatic pistols! These two Colts were both shipped to Rock Island Arsenal on April 18, 1917, just twelve days after the United States declared war on Germany and entered World War One! No effort was ever made by the military to keep pistols together by serial number and with a total production of over 2.5 million pistols produced over the course of four decades, it's not often you will find a pair of "twins" reunited. These two pistols, serial numbers 143614 & 143615, took different paths after they parted ways in 1917. Not much is known about 143615 but according to a family story, 143614 was found wrapped in a heavy plastic cover in a Jeep track on Omaha Beach D-Day+1. The man who found it was a communications specialist who was with several others sent in to string wire and set up more permanent communications. Both pistols retain their factory original brushed blue finish and despite being apart for a century are in remarkably similar condition. The pistols are shown side by side in the photos to make comparisons easier (the photos were a lot of work!). It is easy to see that the slides are original to the frames and were manufactured at the same time. The rollmarkings are identical with small details like minor breaks in some of the letters of the roll dies matching on both guns. Pistol 143614 is in very fine shape and appears to be completely original. It retains about 95% of its original finish with just a small amount of finish thinning to the mainspring housing, some very minor sharp edge wear, and a small area of fine pitting about the "ARMY" marking on the right side of the slide. The small parts are all correct and the barrel appears to be original to the pistol with matching internal wear patterns. Both grips are of the 15-row Colt style with the side grip panel showing the most wear. The lower left grip screw is stuck in its bushing which has come unstaked from the frame. The mechanics are in perfect working order and the bore rates about "very good" with strong, sharp rifling and some light pitting. It comes with a very good condition original two-tone Colt magazine. Pistol 143615 is in very good condition and is mostly original. It retains about 90% of its original finish with a just bit more thinning than its brother. There is a little more sharp edge wear as well as some marks in the finish around the right grip panel. There is no significant rust or pitting. The small parts are all correct however the barrel appears to be correctly marked replacement. The left grip is of the 15-row Colt style while the right grip appears to be a 13-row panel possibly from a Remington-UMC. The mechanics are in perfect working order however the bore rates poor with significant pitting. It comes with a very good condition original two-tone Colt magazine. Overall, a very nice set of pistols made just as the United States entered "the war to end all wars"! One factory letter is included as well as a handmade wooden display stand so you can show off this unique pair of 1911's. SOLD Manufacturer: Colt Serial Number: 143614 143615 |
