Description:
REMINGTON ARMS-U.M.C. Model 95 O/U Double DERRINGER Type III .41 C&R Pistol
Long-Lived American OVER/UNDER Conceal & Carry
Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Remington Arms – U.M.C. Model 95 Type III Double Derringer, made circa 1912-1935 in Ilion, New York. This example is chambered in .41 caliber rimfire with a total production of approximately 55,000. The double deringer was made by Remington from 1866 to 1935, which is a testament to the design as well as the commercial market for such a trusty and concealable firearm. The Deringer was sturdily built and simple in operation. A lever on the right side of the frame swings so that the barrels may open upward on a hinge for loading and unloading. There is a single firing pin that moves from one barrel to another with each cock.
The Model 95 Double Deringer was designed by William Elliot of Remington, who had previously designed a whole series of popular and successful pocket pistols and deringers for the firm. The Model 95 was unique in that it provided the “big bore” punch of the .41 rimfire cartridge in a very compact package and offered the user two shots without a reload. The small number of .41 RF deringers that preceded the Model 95 to the market were single shot pistols, so the Model 95 offered twice the firepower of its competition. The pistol was patented by Elliot and Remington in 1865 and went into production in 1866. The overwhelming success and popularity of the Model 95 is underscored by the fact that it remained in production from 1866 through 1935 and more than 150,000 of these iconic pistols were produced during those 69 years! Below are the various types with a description of each.
Type III (also known as the Model 4): circa 1912-1935, about 55,000 produced, one line marking on top of barrel changed to: REMINGTON ARMS U.M.C. CO., ILION, N.Y.
The Remington Deringer has been made famous, especially in the old Western films, but use of these guns really was widespread. Lawmen and gangsters alike would carry them as backups or something to stick in a pocket. Civilians loved them, as well as those in the military. In fact, the NRA Museum has a specimen in their collection which was carried as a backup by a pilot during the Korean War in the 1950s.
