SCARCE Antique Remington New Model POLICE Revolver

Factory Converted to a Cartridge Firearm

Here we present an antique Remington New Model Police Revolver, made circa 1873. The New Model began production as a percussion pistol, but was quickly adapted to metallic cartridges, so that the greater balance of the 18,000 production was made in cartridge format. The New Model Police was a product offering intended to compete directly with Colt’s 1862 Police Revolver, vying for the same urban law enforcement market, which preferred small, light and handy revolvers to the larger, more powerful revolvers used by the military. The factory conversion of a percussion pistol to cartridge involved machining out part of the frame, as well as machining the cylinder and fitting it with a special cap. These are scarce and hard to find today.

The overall condition is very good. The markings are clear and legible. The wood grips are very nice and numbered to the gun. All serial numbers match. The bore is very good. The hammer and trigger action is functional, though the cylinder must be aided in turning.

Barrel is round and 4.5 inches in length. 9 inches overall length.

Caliber: .38 rimfire

The bore is in very good condition and the firing mechanism is functional with the exception of cylinder rotation.
