Guns International #: 101603752
Seller's Inventory #: AH6250
The Remington Vest Pocket (called the No. 1 by Remington) was made from circa 1865 to 1888. Also known as the ""Saw Handle Deringer"", this gun is the early type in which the hammer doubles as the breechblock. The 3.25"" octagon to round barrel is integral to the frame. It has a fair bore with roughness but with visible rifling. The top of the breech is marked ""REMINGTON,S. ILION. N."" (the Y is not present) over ""PATENT OCT. 1. 1861"". The original ivory grips are fine with a couple of age cracks on the bottom. The metal was silver plated. Traces remain on the barrel and top of the frame. The action functions correctly. The frame sides and top are factory engraved in scroll pattern. The bottom grip strap is engraved ""Chas. E. Forbes"". An internet search reveals that Charles Edward Forbes (1795 - 1881) was a lawyer, judge, and philanthropist in Northhampton, MA. A one pate write-up on and picture of Forbes is included with the gun. If you collect Remington pistols or historic guns, this one is for you!
