NICE Antique U.S. REMINGTON M1867 NAVY Rolling Block .50 CF MILITARY Pistol Scarce U.S. Navy Rolling Block CENTERFIRE Pistol
Description: NICE Antique U.S. REMINGTON M1867 NAVY Rolling Block .50 CF MILITARY Pistol Scarce U.S. Navy Rolling Block CENTERFIRE Pistol Here we present an antique U.S. Remington Rolling Block Model 1867 Navy Pistol made in Ilion, New York circa the late 1860s. The Model 1867 pistol uses a .50 caliber Remington Pistol Center Fire cartridge and a thumb latch activated Rolling Block. These were an update to the previous Model 1865, which was made for rimfire cartridges. The action was quite robust and could easily withstand the increased pressure of the new smokeless powders coming into use by the late 1880s. Only about 6,000 of these were made for the U.S. Navy. The rolling block design was an evolution of the split breech carbine design of Leonard Geiger. Geiger’s intent was to design an arm using a metallic cartridge that could be cheaply and easily manufactured for use during the American Civil War. Remington manufactured about 20,000 split breech carbines in three different rimfire calibers, but most were delivered too late to be used in the war. These pistols were a strange selection for a martial pistol given the prevalence of revolvers by this time and the obvious drawbacks of single shot weapons. Nonetheless, they are powerful sidearms and are incredibly reliable, just like the Remington rolling block rifles. These had a sturdy, simple action that was relatively inexpensive and was just the ticket for shipboard weapons for the U.S. Navy. These were, in fact, firearms that would not see a whole lot of use the vast majority of the time. An anchor is located on the top of the barrel with inspector initials “H.E.” for U.S. Navy Commander Henry Erben, along with “F.C.W.” on the right side of the frame for Ordnance Inspector Frank C. Warner. Although Remington continues to make rolling block long guns even to this day, these rolling block pistols were made only up to about 1872, since by 1873 both Colt and Remington were free to make cartridge revolvers and the single shot pistol was abandoned as a military weapon. The overall condition is very good. The action is excellent. The bore is in fine condition, shiny bright with sharp rifling. Clear inspection marks throughout including a cartouche on the grip. Solid grip. A hearty U.S. Naval pistol from the latter part of the 1860s! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 7 inches. Caliber: .50 Centerfire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
