Remington Elliot's Patent Ring Trigger "Zig-Zag" Derringer
Description:
A scarce and historically important Remington pocket firearm, this “Elliott’s Pocket Revolver” is one of fewer than 1,000 manufactured in 1861–1862 and represents Remington’s first design made to fire metallic cartridges—an important milestone for collectors of early cartridge arms.
Rare production history:
Fewer than 1,000 manufactured
Produced only in 1861–1862
Period advertisements identified these as “Elliott’s Pocket Revolvers”
Major Remington historical significance:
Among the first Remington firearms designed to fire metallic cartridges
A key transitional piece from percussion-era arms to self-contained cartridge firearms
Highly collectible pocket-pistol format:
Small pocket pistols of this type are difficult to find in any condition
Many saw extensive carry use, as they were commonly kept in pockets, making surviving examples especially desirable
Factory markings:
Left side of the frame has the standard three-line Elliot’s patent marking
Right side of the frame has the standard three-line Remington address
Matching-number details:
Matching serial number is located on the left side of the grip frame
Matching serial number is also hand-scratched inside each grip panel

Grips:
Fitted with a pair of smooth gutta percha grips
Gutta percha was an early hard rubber-like material commonly used on period firearms and adds to the authentic 19th-century character
An appealing acquisition for collectors focused on early Remington firearms, Civil War-era pocket arms, scarce metallic-cartridge designs, and historically significant American firearms development
