Unique Ruger Mark I Possible Factory Sample/Trade Show Display Piece
Description: Unique Ruger Mark I Possible Factory Sample/Trade Show Display Piece
Offered here for sale is another newly acquired fine collectible from the home of the RCA (Ruger Collectors Assc.). With our offices just steps away from the original Ruger factory in Southport, CT we have had the good fortune to acquire many Ruger prototypes, employee take home guns, factory samples and LOW NUMBERED specimens. This specimen, a Ruger Mark I standard model was produced circa 1982. It is our opinion that was a possible "trade show gun" presumably made for Sturm Ruger which may have been a sample and unique piece. This specimen is gold washed/plated on the side of the barrel with "straight Shooter" in a panel and rear frame with a depicted of a reclining "goddess". We had attempted to perform research as to whether this was indeed a sample for a show decades ago and we posted images in a recent volume of our Ruger Collectors Assoc. (RCA) Journal which we run in Southport, Ct - the home of the RCA and our retail shop and gallery in Southport-in close proximity to the original factory. Over the years we have sponsored many special orders for the RCA (for which we have about 2000 members and publish a quarterly 60-page journal. We also man our large exhibit annually at the NRA convention. To date we have only come up with the fact that the artwork was performed locally. In the past we also have had local subcontractors who performed work by us sub-contractors, engravers, plating companies, etc. did the same for the Sturm Ruger Co. which in turn made such sample specimens available to us after promotion as factory sample or show guns. This specimen had resided in our factory collection after it was sold years ago to an individual, light used, and reacquired by us recently. This Specimen’s Unique Features Our description of the gold-washed barrel side reading “Straight Shooter” and a reclining goddess on the rear frame plus the same on the left side with Ruger trademarks. Bill Ruger's signature in script. Also Ruger plated logos across the top of barrel. This suggests this is not a standard production firearm but rather a custom or promotional piece—likely crafted as a trade show sample. Styles like this are exactly what Ruger and their local subcontractor partners would showcase at events or casework. • In 1979, Ruger famously commissioned a gold-inlaid Standard Auto pistol to commemorate the One Millionth unit produced, with special engraving by Ray Viramontez • This piece, however, while it is not that anniversary gun (which carries a specific milestone serial and known provenance). may be an independently commissioned sample, likely made after being acquired for Ruger’s internal "factory collection" or via local subcontractor/artisan networks.
Background 1. Timeline fits – it's contemporaneous with those late production Standard/Mark I pistols before the shift to Mk II and later generations. 2. Gold-plated artwork – aligns with examples Ruger made for internal commemorations and trade exhibits. 3. Local origin – Our knowledge of Southport-area engravers, plating shops, and past subcontracted work to Sturm, Ruger supports this being a locally produced showpiece, not part of regular factory catalog offerings. As mentioned this specimen has seen quite a deal of use by the individual who owned it before we acquired it some years ago after manufacture. 4. As is an interesting piece of artwork-possibly unique and a fine display piece -especially in any Ruger collection.
