Civil War Savage 1861 Self-Cocking Navy Revolver
Description:
Serial #14028, .36 Caliber, 7" octagon barrel with a fair, lightly freckled bore. This is a very interesting revolver that retains traces of the original blue on protected areas, and a mottled gray-brown patina on the balance. Some further mild pinprick pitting is present on the cylinder, as well as on the nose of the hammer, and there are some small peen marks scattered about the metal. The walnut grips are in good-near very good shape, with minor handling marks and blemishes on both panels; some linear bruises are present around the grip screw bolsters on either side, and a faint inspector cartouche is present on the butt of the left panel. The serial numbers match on the underside of the barrel and the back of the cylinder which is pitted but still show the "140". "These cumbersome revolvers used a complicated two-trigger action that required the user to pull the lower ring trigger to both rotate the cylinder and cock the hammer, while the upper trigger fired the gun. The action on this revolver is fully functional and works flawlessly. Despite their drawbacks, the US Government contracted for 11,984 of them. This is one of those military-purchased revolvers, and is in good-near very good condition overall. Antique
