Sig Sauer P220 .45 ACP Made 1998 with Original Box
Description: One of Sig’s finest pistols, the P220 was designed to replace the Sig P210 pistol in Swiss Army service. It entered service as the P75 in 1975 chambered for the 9mm Parabellum cartridge. It was also quickly adopted for military issue by Denmark and Japan. The P220 was introduced to the U.S. market as the Browning BDA in 1977, chambered for the .45 ACP. At that point, it still retained the heel mounted magazine release found on early P220s. It sold rather poorly, either as a result of its space-age appearance or the nature of the magazine release. The BDA was discontinued in 1980. Eventually, with the switch to a more conventional magazine release, the pistol was reintroduced to the American market under the official P220 label. It became far more successful the second time around and saw much use over the years by several law enforcement agencies. Designed as a duty pistol, the P220 is also suited to such tasks as home-defense and competition shooting. This example here, using the serial number, was produced around 1998 and comes with its original box, manual, and two 8-round magazines. It is equipped with its original set of Sig night sights. They no longer function of course as they are well over 15 years old, which is the usual life expectancy of night sights. Still one of Sig Sauer’s more popular models, and given the number produced, replacement night sights are easy to come by. The double-action/single-action (DA/SA) nature of the pistol, combined with Sig’s trademark de-cocker, makes the P220 a very safe pistol to operate. Mechanically, the pistol is sound. The trigger is smooth and crisp. The barrel is in very good condition although, as is usually the case, the top face lacks any finish due to the interaction between slide and barrel during firing. This is common to most Sig Sauer pistols. The rear top of the slide shows a small amount of wear to the Nitron finish. It is difficult to notice unless the pistol is held in the light at a certain angle. Pictures 8 and 13 illustrate this. There are two light scratches on the right-hand side of the trigger. Overall, the pistol is in excellent shape. It should be noted that the barrel does not have the rectangular cutout at the back of the chamber as on later models and newer barrels will not interchange with the original. Interestingly, the slide has “Made in Germany” on the right-hand side, but still has “Exeter-NH” on the left side. Sig pistols are well known world-wide for their accuracy and reliability. If you are looking for a reliable .45 pistol for home or self-defense, the P220 is an excellent choice.
