SIG Hämmerli, P240 Target Pistol, 38 Spl WC, Super Provenance from 1974-75, Original Sig P240 Box, Excellent Condition!

Available for sale is an Excellent condition Sig Hämmerli P240, in the competition shooting caliber of 38 Spl WC.
This SIG Hämmerli P240 target pistol, is 1 of 50 pistols to first be imported into the United States by Gil Hebard, Inc out of Illinois. Gil Hebard was well-known in Pistol Shooting competition, Firearms, and Supplies going back to the 1950’s.
The attached letter indicates this specific pistol was manufactured in 1974 and was in the first group of 50 Sig Hämmerli P240 pistols to enter the US in late 1974. The letter dated January 13th, 1975 states there was an unexpected delay by the Treasury Dept and this pistol was held up in Customs. This was the first time that the BATF had seen the P240, and it was required to be in compliance with the Gun Control Act of 1968. The letter states, “As this is the first shipment of these guns to come into the US, the ATF has not tested one before.”
It is estimated that fewer than 3,000 total pistols in .38 Special WC were manufactured in total.
The documents of provenance associated with this particular P240 pistol indicate it was indeed one of the first P240’s to enter the US in late 1974, and ATF approved in early 1975.
This is a standard configuration pistol, with fully adjustable target grade sights, manufacturer reference on the left side of the slide, SN and caliber repeated on the right side of the barrel and slide, and serial number on the frame.
This P240 is fitted with beautifully grained smooth oversized Walnut ergonomic grips. Grips have no blemishes, or scratches to speak of.
The Package comes with 2 SIG designed 38 Spl WC magazines with a zippered spine, and Takedown tool. Pistol, Magazines, and tool are boxed in an early red/white Sig/Hämmerli P240 box with end label that matches the pistol SN. There was some light speckling on the slide that was professionally cleaned & finished. The Walnut Grips are in exceptional condition with excellent coloring and no blemishes to speak of. Both magazines are SIG originals, with some insertional wear on spine. Bore is shiny with sharp lands a grooves.
Pistol comes with original red SIG Hammerli shipping box that shows slight wear around the hinge, and the foam inside has disintegrated due to its 51 year age.
There are a large number of original documents also regarding the option to offer a 22 Cal conversion kit, original sales receipts going back to 1974-75. P240 Instruction Manual, A letter from Gil Hebard discussing the initial 1974 delay of the pistol being sold due to BATF requirements. Also, an article featuring this Sig P240 in the April, 1976 issue of The American Rifleman Magazine. This is a great opportunity to own a top condition competition target pistol that has a very strong trail of provenance of being 1 of 50 of the first Sig P240 pistols to enter the US in 1974. These characteristics should have strong appeal to collectors of Swiss high end precision competition pistols!
This pistol can also be sold in CA due to the P240 being on the roster of exempted Olympic shooting competition pistols.
